The Indiana Jones Extravaganza: Part Two
Part two of two of the Indiana Jones review series. Our three reviewers sit down and have a discussion of the latest installment of the Indiana Jones series.
SN23: Welcome back, fellow poopers. As you remember, last time, Metal Kiwi and I did a review of the Lego Indiana Jones game. Now, for the last part of the Indy special, we will review the new Indy movie, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. But we won’t be doing it with just us. UncleChuckTH will also hop along for the ride. Now gentlemen, let’s talk movie.
FMK: I saw the movie opening night, the minute it came out. I was kinda excited, but there were MAJOR Indy fans there. Hardcore lovers.
SN23: I saw it opening day too, but after school. I had movie nachoes and peanut M&Ms, but I ate them all before the movie even began, lol…
FMK: What’s the deal with movie snacks costing so much? [/seinfeld]
SN23: Yeah… So when did you see this, UncleChuck?
UCTH: I also saw it at midnight, brought a ton of friends with me and sat through it. I actually saved my popcorn till the movie started though. =D
FMK: So what shall we discuss first, the plot? I’ll start:
The plot for Crystal Skull is about these Russian guys (insert commie references) looking for a crystal skull that is somewhere in Peru. Apparently, these skulls increase….. telepathic powers…? Then a kid called Mutt convinces Indy to help find his mom and encounters the kwazy Russians. That’s pretty nuch the gist of it.
SN23: Yeah, and there are major plot twists in the movie, which we won’t spoil for you. The opening scene is also pretty amazing. Harrison Ford really hasn’t changed much.
UCTH: The plot wasn’t deep, but neither are any of the Indy movies. It provided with us with some action sequences, a south-american encounter with some natives, ancient legends, a few sarcasm-filled discussions between the characters, and a search for the city of gold, which can’t help but remind me of National Treasure 2. Some of the characters were undeveloped, and the ending was ridiculously cheesy, so the plot isn’t the highlight. I don’t see it as needing to be the highlight in this type of movie however.
SN23: I would’ve liked to know more about Mac, seriously. Honestly, I enjoyed John Williams’s score. Of course, all of the Indy scores are great, in my opinion.
FMK: I don’t think you can really look at this movie for plot. It’s Indy! He goes in, kicks ass, finds treasure, and maybe someone dies a really cool death; and this movie had some pretty cool deaths.
SN23: Yeah, I mean who would have suspected “death by killer ants”? Well, it was obvious when they first appeared onscreen.
FMK: Speaking of killer ants, everything after that scene, for me, was a “What the hell?” moment. I don’t know if I enjoyed it, I don’t know if I hated it, but I was very damn confused for the rest of that movie. I won’t give anything away, but… I mean, we had Nazis melting in previous movies, and even THIS movie had me going “Are they really serious?”
SN23: The “3 times it drops” scene wasn’t really plausible, but it was a guilty pleasure for me, I’d say.
FMK: I guess it was a bit mind-boggling how the movie was classic-Indy the entire time, and then we get the last part of the film that becomes so ridiculous, for no reason. I really wished the movie just did something different with the finale… to change one scene is one thing, but this is the finale we’re talking about. It almost felt like I was ripped off. “Hey hey, here’s some amazing scenes, you like, you like? Sorry, now you get this ending.”
SN23: Personally, I found the ending to be cheesy, but I have a guilty pleasure for it. Sure, it may have been hokey, but it had it’s share of good scenes to me. And do I see a bit of the AVGN in your post?
FMK: Oh, that movie review for it? Yeah, I kinda feel the same, albeit some differences. I don’t know if I can really say this movie is a worthy sequel. Hell, Temple of Doom was in the series too, but I feel like that’s more of an Indy movie than this one.
Oh boy, people are gonna skin me for that one…
SN23: Yup, dude. Prepare to die at the hands of thousands of Indy fans. But yeah, I did agree with the Nerd on Hound Dog being head in the first minute of the film. We could’ve guessed it was the 50’s by:
A. The cars.
B. The clothing.
UCTH: The ending was cheesy, yeah, but it’s nothing we haven’t seen before. Raiders had an equally odd ending, corny, perhaps, disappointing, yes, but like I said, the plot isn’t much to speak of. It had to end somehow, and methinks Speilberg may have been feeling (SPOILERS) a bit nostalgic for Close Encounters, so that’s what we got. Odd, yeah. It could’ve been handled better, I mean, they could have at least made it look believable.
SN23: Well, at least you didn’t give the ending away completely by saying that nostalgia bit, but I did like how the artifact of the movie tied in with that.
UCTH: Honestly, I didn’t think the CGI of that scene were believable. But I’m treading on thin ice here, spoiler-wise.
FMK: I would’ve liked to see more special effects aside from CGI. Indy didn’t need it before, why now? Kinda why the new Star Wars movies blew (although I liked the third movie, but not for obvious reasons).
Safe to say, I think we can agree the movie is worth watching in theaters, just don’t expect too much?
SN23: I agree. If you’re going to enter the theater, enter hoping to see a fun film, because that’s what you’ll get. If you’re looking for an Oscar-worthy film, then go watch Iron Man, because, hey, this is the 4th in a series. What more do you want?
UCTH: One thing I do know about this movie is that all the sets were custom-built, so that part of it is very real indeed. Generally, I agree with what has been said here. Fun action flick that goes out to all ages, but it isn’t that deep in the end.
FMK: A solid 4/5 from me!
UCTH: Same.
SN23: I give it a 4.5/5. I kinda liked this movie compared to Temple of Doom, but Raiders and Crusade triumphs over this, obviously.
Well, poopers, That concludes our two part Indiana Jones review fest. I’ll see you again for my next movie review, and it might be epic, depending on what you like. Thank you for your time.
