Superhero Movie
Hold onto your seats, because we’re gonna review a super-powered parody! From the director of Scary Movie and The Naked Gun comes a parody movie with Drake Bell and Leslie Neilsen. I think this movie shows that Neilsen is still a god of comedy and that Drake Bell may be seeing some new career opportunities! I will break this movie review into three parts: Plot, Comedy, and Direction. I will then give my overall opinion of the movie in the end.
Plot (3/5)
Rick Riker is a nobody kid photoit borrows nicely from each movie to create a plot, but it’s mostly Spider-man’s plot we’ll see. Now plot usually doesn’t matter in parody movies but there are a few points I have to take points away from. I think the X-men references should have just been taken out all together. I know it’s “Superhero” Movie, but I was fine with it just parodying Spider-man. It’s basically a way of adding more super hero jokes, but they don’t really work, and fail altogether. The Fantastic Four scene was funny, and didn’t have to be a whole sub-plot just to get a joke. Plot isn’t super-important, but the X-men sub-plot really took away from it.
Comedy (4/5) ![]()
Holy hell, this movie was way funnier than I thought it would. Some parts had me laughing very audibly, so points for that! I have to take away a point, however, due to a lot of jokes just not being funny. The movie is very hit-and-miss, you could say. But when it hits, you are laughing hard. Even when it misses, you almost want to forgive the movie, “Hey, it’s okay that didn’t make me laugh, you’re doing good, movie!” Some parts that were good were the sexual predator and Barry Bond jokes, both kitten gags (cats = insta-humor), all computer scenes, and any scene that had Neilsen in it. Some parts that did not work were the Xavier scenes, the aunt’s fart scene, and the groan-tastic iPod parody (in the very beginning, of all places).
Direction (2/5)
This is the part of the review where I really shake my finger at the director. Drake Bell did a wonderful job, Neilsen stole the show because he’s Leslie Neilsen, and in fact, most of the cast did a pretty good job! But he slipped up with getting a believable performance from a lot of the extras. For example, some extras have ridiculous “shocked” faces and some of the policemen acted a bit hokey. Why would this matter in a parody movie? Think back to Airplane!, The Naked Gun, Spaceballs, or even Scary Movie 3. These movies cast very straight-faced actors. Extreme, serious acting made the ridiculous situations even more funny because they were treated so serious. Superhero Movie lacks that straight-edge punch of yesteryear by not having the extras deliver that extra icing on the cake. If the director had gotten that right, this movie would have been loads funnier, so that’s why I took so many points away.
Overall (Better than I expected)
The trailers for this movie looked lackluster and I didn’t expect much for this movie. Yet, despite a couple flaws, I really enjoyed this movie. It was really funny at times and the movie wasn’t even that long, so it was painless to the end. Is it the funniest movie ever? No. Is it the best parody movie ever? Not even close. However, after the epic failures of Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans, this movie was absolute gold. It has some fantastic moments you’ll remember after the movie ends. I would recommend seeing it in a group, or at least a crowded theater, since these types of movies are always funnier in a big crowd. It’s a must-see, but if you’re really hesitant, wait for it rent on DVD.

Nice review. I expected the movie to be a lot better than a lot of people say at the forums, but I’ll have to see for myself.
