MEDIA DIGEST 2: Revenge of the Forgotten Reviews

October 02, 2008 By: Christoph Category: Site News 2 Comments →

Hello, Christoph here. Getting back into the swing of the school year for all of you, from middle school students to college seniors, has been quite difficult in some way. Now that the soothing song of the summer has sailed on, we are left in the leaves of autumn that are piling up on us. The News Staff have been busy with their own personal affairs, and for that we apologize not only to you but to our own staff members. We have had articles ready to publish for quite some time but they were left in the dust. Well I’m digging them up: A game review by JimPaladin  on Eternal Sonata and a music review by ThyToonyman on Talk Talk’s “Spirit of Eden”. I hope you enjoy the articles and I hope your October is better than your September. (more…)

The Review Crew: “FRED GETS IN BEFORE A HIATUS”

September 30, 2008 By: Full Metal Kiwi Category: Site News 8 Comments →

Greetings from The Review Crew. Full Metal Kiwi (FMK) here today, alongside thewafflemaster (TWM), TheDarkRises (TDR), and RealGenericFilms (RGF). We have a new review up for you, this one from Sergeant Bacon, called “FRED GETS IN BEFORE A HIATUS.”

This review is a bit different, in that we each submitted a short review as opposed to our usual round-table-esque discussion. This will probably be the last time we do something like this, but it’s good to mix things up.

TWM: To be frank, I’ll first put forth that this is a poop that’s only worth a watch. This is just your typical Vegas poop that is seen and then forgotten about. By no means is it bad, but nothing really sparked out as original. Effects were generic, text was unfunny, and it became overallFred, comin' at ya. predictable. Though running at a decent 0:44 seconds, it seemed to drag on for a longer time. The poop could have been slightly more enjoyable if it had been cut to 30 seconds and gotten rid of the annoying “Indiana Jones” theme at the end. If you’re going to put music in a poop you should make sure its not taking up a full third of the video. Another thing I disliked was the text; it just didn’t work, but then again, it rarely does no matter who uses it. It seemed both out of place and unnecessary.

On a positive note, I found the beginning 20 seconds the most amusing. The effects were fresh and the poop was traveling at a pretty good pace. I found the compressed and rotating image pretty creative and amusing. Also, the stuttering and reversing was proving to be pretty decent (not too long, good length) but after the “What a gay nose” it all went downhill for me.

This poop is worth watching, but would have been more entertaining if it had been a shorter length. Even though it was a typical generic Vegas YTP, you can tell that Sergeant Bacon has potential. He is worth a check out, but make a call for yourself before subbing.

TDR: I quite enjoyed - scratch that - I REALLY liked it. It had a little of everything, but the thing that really stood out for me was G Major, But the text blocks the nose!which is now like a lost art for me. The ear rape technique was good, but I think it could have used a little distortion or something, but I really liked it. The Indiana Jones music was alright. It might have been too out of there for my taste though. Reverses were appropriately placed, I really liked it.

My only negative comment is the ending screen cut-off. Usually poops like that make me await the appearance of some last second scene, mostly ear rape or stutter. But instead I wait for 5 seconds and get a small message for Syn (Synister Sir?).

In conclusion, there were not many problems with this particular piece. It was invigorating to see such talent. Fred: not so enthralling.

RGF: This poop is a pretty good one. It starts with great stutter, (perfect moment to stutter, in my opinion) and a spastic stretch which was unexpected. Then, it turns up the volume gain on a scene where Fred raps, for great effect. Third, Fred screams then reverses it, but the splicing was shoddy for it shows another scene in it, but works great. A stutter in the middle then a yell of “I WANT NED!” is next, but wasn’t too good but could be used in a YTPMV for excellent effect. Some funny stutters appear, then one of the best reverses in a poop ever in my opinion, that then goes devilish with color correction and sound mixing.

At this point, if the poop was the stock market and higher meant funner to watch, the stock market crashed. It shows a still with the Indy theme playing and some random text… and four seconds of nothing. If the poop did not have the ending, which was made as filler as evident in the cutoff text, “Long enough, Syn?” I would fave, but as the poop was excellent before the ending which was made to appease Synister Sir and could be taken off, I’m subbing. Kudos to FullMetalKiwi for finding this pooper.

FMK: I felt that this was an “average” poop. Not too great, not too bad, but right in the middle. It does feel a little long, and it’s a short poop Fred finally implodes upon himself.(under a minute!). The problem comes from its execution: there’s some great effects and editing at first, but it dies so slowly. I found the Indy music funny, actually, but then the text came and then the black… and then a message? I have no idea what that was about. If it was for annoyance, it works, but it appears out of place in this fast-paced poop.

This pooper has a lot of potential and seems to know what they want to do. Excluding the ending, I’d like to see more poops like this style: confusing, fast-paced, and effects-filled. I’d say it’s worth a watch.

That’s all from The Review Crew! Keep an eye out for our next review, where we may have a surprise (or two) for you!

Pooper’s Block

September 16, 2008 By: Full Metal Kiwi Category: Site News 21 Comments →

Furnessly here, yes the boring news member around these parts who spends more time at a sprite website than here and many members have fallen asleep already by my words but there was something I wanted to address and that is the “pooper’s block;” a disease that affects many poopers, including myself as a matter of fact.

A young business man diagnosed with pooper's block.Well, what is a pooper’s block? It is some device that keeps poopers locked up in a cage or on a road forcing people to go elsewhere? No, a pooper’s block basically means that you find it hard to make a poop even though you want to or have to in case of a tennis match which is also called fatigue, burned out or just plain fed up of making these videos.

However it doesn’t affect every pooper as some can make a 20 second loop of a man hitting himself on a frying pan with ear rape for example and put it up. It originally came from writer’s block which is a common cause to writers but it can apply to anything artistic like animator’s block. There are ways to identify a pooper’s block which can be hard to tell otherwise.

1. Tiredness or the Brain Drain

When you are in front of a computer doing what you have to do, you go on to Vegas/WMM/Premiere to do your poop but you feel tired and can’t think of what to put or the effects to shove in, so only a little bit can be made. Even if you publish it onto Youtube, it feels like you lost your touch and not happy by the results so it gets left abandoned. It can also apply if you are under pressure, such as a 12 hour tennis match and a lack of motivation can arise from the poop that you are trying to make.Pooper's block is an obstacle only you can overcome.

2. Lack of inspiration and ideas

Common to many poopers and the reason why some such as Misselaineous10 has not returned to pooping. While some, like mentioned before, can do anything to a poop, some people need something to trigger to make a video whether it is something or someone around you, a new exploitable source (like with the Nostalgia Critic people have been doing recently), or a technique that is rarely used. However when you have the pooper’s block it can be hard to find inspiration that is needed to make the poop.

3. Out of action

Pooper's block is known to cause extreme facepalms.A rarer one but it does happen, especially for the older generation who have to work, are focused on another website,  just having problems with real life, or your computer has been broke for a month or two. When you come back to your video editor, you wonder if it is possible to recreate the so-called “glory days,” where your videos were liked by many people.

4. It happens

For some people it just happens with no reason at all that you are stuck and you don’t know how to get out.

There are some cures (which sadly do not apply to everyone), such as new sources, new editing techniques, drinking a bottle of Lucozade or anyExtreme energy for extreme pooping (in more ways than one!). other energetic/isotonic drink to get the energy needed (not Gatorade, it needs something powerful and yes it does work), make a few practice poops and see if they match your satisfaction, watching other poopers or even tennis matches (which are a double edge sword as in that they can cause pooper’s block yet also can cure it as you are remixing the previous poop and that might cause movitation).

ZZzzz… Fine, here are some memes to wake you up. CORY IN THE HOUSE, Cool story bro, a witty statement from MilesTailsPrower/TangerineImpz, MORNIN’, I’m JimPadalin and I’m awesome, Moneyyy, Dog Flipping Pancake, Nostalgia Critic picture, name fad.
